Field Trip to Marbles Museum

I will be honest, field trips aren't my favorite.  They weren't my favorite as a teacher and they aren't my favorite as a parent.  But, I am much more relaxed as a parent on field trips than I was with a teacher.  That being said, I am so very fortunate that I am able to spend these days with my girls.  When I worked, I would have had to take the day off and feel guilty about leaving my classroom full of kiddos.  Now I have zero guilt!!

This field trip was to Marbles Museum in downtown Raleigh.  There were enough chaperones from our class that I only had to be in charge of one other kiddo.  Lucky for me,  I got a super sweet one.  Karcie and Sam had such a fun time navigating each exhibit at Marbles.  Their only complaint was being STARVING!  They have lunch at 11:00 at school.  They didn't get to eat until 12:30ish. 

I will admit, even though field trip days aren't my favorite, this one was pretty good!  My girl had fun and so did the rest of the Kindergarten cuties.

Then it was Karcie's turn.  They had to use the paddles to make wind.  The guy running the show measured their wind speed.  They were trying to beat the last groups speed which was 5.2 mph or something like that.

Onsite Field Trip in 5th Grade

I jumped in at the tail end of this on site field trip at Kamdyn's school.  I was at substitute teacher orientation in the morning and joined Kamdyn's class in the afternoon.  These kids had a great time going back in time.  They created necklaces using beads and real pieces of leather from animals.  They wrote with quills and ink.  They dresses up in cute dresses.  At the end, I convinced them to take a class photo.  They had to dab in one of them!  Silly kiddos!

AIG Field Trip to The Renaissance Festival

I was able to enjoy another field trip with my biggest girl this Fall, too.  We chartered a bus to Huntersville, NC (2.5 hrs away).  We had a fun-filled day traveling back in time.  It really was amazing to see all of the people dressed in costume.  The shows that we saw were really amazing.  We were paired with a sweet group of girls!  Even our principal, Mrs. Leach, went on the trip with us.  I am very thankful for great teachers and leaders who make days like this happen for our children.  Yay for Scott's Ridge!!

Old Salem Field Trip

One of my most favorite things about being a work-from-home Mommy is that I get to attend school events without feeling guilty about shirking other responsibilities. I was so happy that I got to go with Kamdyn and her class to Old Salem in Winston Salem.  It is truly a remarkable place.  A city that the Moravians started back in the 1800's.  

The houses and buildings are still mostly the original structures.  George Washington actually stayed in one of the taverns as he was passing through.  The kids got to see how people lived long ago.  They were minimalists which I could completely get behind.  They didn't have a lot of stuff.  Their rooms literally had a bed and one truck for clothing.  We got to see a presentation by a shoemaker.  She explained how the shoes were made with molds and leather.  She told the kids that their shoes would have been made a couple of sizes too big so they could wear them for several years.  One. Pair. Of. Shoes.  She also told them that one pair of good shoes back then would cost the equivalent of $300-$400 in today's time.  But they kept their shoes for years!  

We got to see a tailor in action and a woodworker.  We also got to visit the town bakery for some delicious treats!!

Sydney got to be in our group so the three of us had a super fun time walking around Old Salem.

Kamdyn's teacher asked me to ride the bus so I could help with distributing the snacks that I brought for the class.  She didn't know that my motion sickness was so terrible!!  Nah, I did find, but  that bus was no joke even as a charter bus....it was still really bumpy!

How the Moravians painted Easter Eggs.  They used coloring from different foods.  It was really neat!

This lady was showing how to make paper flowers.  She said they couldn't get fresh flowers all season for decorating their homes so they make them out of paper.

Making artwork that could be seen when hanging in a window....almost like a window catcher, but they punched holes around the outside of the picture so that light could shine through.  Very neat!

We had to pause for a picture with their buddy, Wyatt.  He's not in their class this year, but was at Olive Chapel.
